As community partners for many years, Wired Production Group is proud to work with Workplace Learning Connection (WLC) to offer group job shadow opportunities to high school students across Eastern Iowa. Job shadow days at Wired Production Group allow students to explore event and video production careers.

Students from 10th through 12th grade in Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn, or Washington counties in Iowa can apply to participate in job shadow days through WLC. Students’ interests vary from video editing to audio mixing to marketing to theatrical lighting and beyond. Occasionally, students attend the job shadow day at Wired Production Group with little to no knowledge or experience of the event and video production world but seek information about career opportunities in the industry.

The Job Shadow Day Experience at Wired Production Group

The event and video production job shadow day is led by our WPG leadership team, including our President/CEO Ron Rausch, COO Aaron Wells, and Marketing Director Nicole Schroeder. Our leaders speak to the students about our company history, the variety of educational backgrounds our staff brings to the workplace, how our daily operations work, and how our company has grown in recent years. Many WPG techs sit in during this part of the job shadow day and contribute to the conversation. Students are encouraged to ask questions about the business, staff, and operations.

Following the more formal part of the job shadow day, students receive a short tour of the office. From there, we invite students to the warehouse where our tech crew sets up stations around the shop to learn about the technology and get hands-on experience with cameras, video switchers, audio and lighting consoles, and other event production technology.

Wired Production Group does such an amazing job with the students. It’s so fun seeing students experience many “lightbulb moments” after their job shadow experience. Many students come into the job shadow not familiar with Wired Production Group, or with any knowledge surrounding the field of event production. Students always leave this shadow experience feeling empowered and excited about a future career in event production, lighting, sound, marketing, and so much more. It is a really neat experience to be a part of.  Our staff at Workplace Learning Connection is forever grateful for Wired Production Group’s partnership!

Here’s what students have to say about job shadow days at Wired Production Group…

  • “At first, I thought I was going to enjoy the audio and video production portions the most, but what really caught my attention were the lights. The lights tech was extremely helpful and allowed me to create my own little light display! The technology was really fun to learn!” – 10th grade student, Prairie High School
  • “I think that this job shadow was valuable because the video production process was explained well.” – 12th grade student, Cedar Rapids Home School Assistance
  • “I talked to Nicole Schroeder at the end of my job shadow. She gave me some really great advice about getting into my career and the importance of networking. She was really helpful in answering questions.” – 11th grade student, Marion High School
